Valorar: ¿qué vale?Valuing: what is worth it?
The just, the valuable, the beautiful: three ways of saying something matters.
Nunca te dicen, solos, qué hacer con él.Facts tell you how the world is. They never tell you, by themselves, what to do with it.
Aristotle writes about êthos: the character one forges through habits. Cicero, translating it, invents a Latin adjective from mos, custom: moralis. Thus two twin words are born for the same matter: how to live well. In the 18th century Hume warns that what ought to be does not simply follow from what is.
In 1735 Baumgarten names aesthetics as the science of sensible knowledge, and Kant in 1790 gives it its great treatise. At the end of the 19th century, amid the crisis of certainties, axiology appears: if values are no longer guaranteed by religion or tradition, we must ask what they are and where they come from.

Ética y moralEthics and morality
Morality is clear: you return it. Ethics asks why: out of respect for the other, fear of being seen, because you would want the same done for you?
If you are short on rent that month, two real values clash: honesty and need. Axiology asks whether one ranks above the other.
There is something beautiful in the gesture of returning it. The Greeks used the same word, kalós, for the beautiful and the noble.
Ética no es reglamentoEthics is not a rulebook
A rulebook tells you what to do; ethics appears exactly when the rulebook falls short or clashes with another.
Valor no es precioValue is not price
A proverb by Antonio Machado says it in two lines: the fool confuses value and price. Price is negotiated; value orients.
Lo bello no es lo bonitoThe beautiful is not the pretty
The pretty pleases and is forgotten. The beautiful, and even more the sublime, can unsettle: a storm, a work that hurts.
Ethics and aesthetics are one and the same.Ludwig Wittgenstein · Tractatus logico-philosophicus, 6.421Ludwig Wittgenstein · Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, 6.421
In the Tractatus neither ethics nor aesthetics can be said in propositions: they show themselves. What unites them is not a fact of the world but a way of seeing it whole, with meaning.
