Desarmar un reloj te enseña cómo funciona. Desarmar un pájaro te enseña cómo funcionaba.Taking a clock apart teaches you how it works. Taking a bird apart teaches you how it used to work.

Democritus proposes that everything is explained by atoms moving in the void. Descartes gives it a method: divide each difficulty into as many parts as needed. Laplace imagines in 1814 an intelligence that, knowing all forces and positions, would see the future like the past. Modern science grows on that promise.

En 1972 el físico Philip Anderson lo resume en un título: «Más es distinto».But from the 19th century on, doubting voices appear: Mill and Lewes speak of effects that are not the sum of their causes; Smuts coins holism in 1926; Poincaré discovers that a deterministic system can be unpredictable. In 1972 physicist Philip Anderson sums it up in a title: «More Is Different».

ReduccionismoReductionism

del latín reducere: reconducir, llevar de vueltafrom Latin reducere: to lead back, bring back

Explaining one level by the components of the level below: mind by neurons, life by chemistry.

What is this made of, and is knowing its pieces enough to understand it?

You are sad from lack of serotonin»: there is some truth in it, but the sentence swallows the loss, the story and the people.

With analysis. Taking apart to understand is a legitimate method; reductionism is the thesis that the whole is nothing but its pieces.

HolismoHolism

Coined by Jan Smuts in 1926

The whole has primacy: the parts are only understood by the place they occupy in it.

What role does this play in the whole it belongs to?

A team full of stars losing to a modest one: what plays is the ensemble, not the sum of talents.

With commercial «holistic» (therapies, cosmetics). And with a riskless virtue: extreme holism also simplifies, because it dissolves the parts into the whole.

EmergenciaEmergence

del latín emergere: salir a la superficiefrom Latin emergere: to rise to the surface

Properties that appear in the ensemble and are not in any of its parts taken separately.

DeterminismoDeterminism

del latín determinare: fijar los límitesfrom Latin determinare: to fix the limits

Everything that happens is fixed by what happened before and by the laws that govern the world.

La pregunta que haceThe question it asks

Un atasco a las seis de la tardeA traffic jam at six in the evening

ReduccionismoReductionism

It is cars and drivers: each one brakes, accelerates, changes lanes. Explain each movement and you will have explained the jam.

HolismoHolism

The jam is a feature of the city: work hours, urban design, public transport. The cars are just its symptom.

EmergenciaEmergence

Sometimes a jam appears with no accident: a slight braking amplifies backward like a wave no driver wants or sees whole.

DeterminismoDeterminism

With all the data, was it written? Perhaps, but one second's difference in a single braking would have changed the outcome: determined is not predictable.

Anderson lo dice asíAnderson puts it this way
“
The ability to reduce everything to simple fundamental laws does not imply the ability to start from those laws and reconstruct the universe.
Philip W. Anderson · «More Is Different», Science 177 (1972)Philip W. Anderson · «More Is Different», Science 177 (1972)

Anderson, who would later win the Nobel Prize in Physics, does not attack reduction: he accepts that everything is made of particles. What he denies is the way back. At each level of complexity, he says, new properties appear that demand their own ideas.
