Interpretar: ¿qué quiere decir?Interpreting: what does it mean?

Nothing speaks by itself: a text, a gesture or a traffic light wait for someone to read them.

Understanding is not extracting a hidden meaning: it is entering into conversation with what speaks to you.

De la exégesis de textos sagrados al arte de comprenderFrom the exegesis of sacred texts to the art of understanding

For centuries interpreting was a specialists' trade: jurists reading ancient laws, theologians reading scriptures. The Greeks also had dialectics: the Socratic art of thinking by asking and answering. Around 1800 Schleiermacher turns interpretation into a general problem: misunderstanding is the norm, understanding requires method.

Dilthey separates the sciences that explain (nature) from those that understand (the human). Meanwhile, Peirce in the United States and Saussure in Geneva found, without knowing each other, the science of signs. In 1960 Gadamer publishes Truth and Method: understanding is the very way we exist.

With «everyone interprets as they please». For Gadamer prejudices are inevitable, but the text resists and corrects: understanding means letting yourself be told something.

With the recipe «thesis, antithesis, synthesis». Hegel hardly used that formula; for him contradiction moves reality, and what is overcome is cancelled and preserved at once.

Un mensaje que dice solo «ok.»A message that says only «ok.»

It cannot be understood without the whole: who sends it, what happened yesterday, how they always write. Your reading brings its history too: if you were worried, you will read anger.

The final period is a sign. In messaging that period became a convention of curtness; in a formal letter it means nothing.

You reply «all good?» and the other person clarifies. The meaning was not in the message: it was produced in the back-and-forth.

Being that can be understood is language.
Hans-Georg Gadamer · Verdad y método, tercera parte (1960)Hans-Georg Gadamer · Truth and Method, part three (1960)

The sentence takes hermeneutics beyond texts. It does not say everything is words, but that everything you come to understand you understand in a linguistic medium, inherited and shared.
