Ser: ¿qué hay?Being: what is there?
The oldest and simplest question: what there is, what it is, and why there is anything.
Before knowing how something works, you have to decide what kind of thing it is.
De Parménides a la «filosofía primera»From Parmenides to «first philosophy»
From then on philosophy never lets go of the question of being. Aristotle shapes it: there is a knowledge, first philosophy, that studies being as being, and he warns that «being is said in many ways».
In the 18th century Christian Wolff orders the field: he calls general metaphysics (being as such) ontology and divides special metaphysics into world, soul and God. Kant will distrust the whole building; Heidegger, in 1927, will say we have forgotten the question itself.

MetafísicaMetaphysics
del griego tà metà tà physiká: lo que va después de la físicafrom Greek tà metà tà physiká: what comes after physics

Esencia y existenciaEssence and existence
del latín essentia (de esse, ser) y exsistere (salir, aparecer)from Latin essentia (from esse, to be) and exsistere (to stand out, appear)
La esencia dice qué es algo; la existencia, que efectivamente es.Essence says what something is; existence, that it actually is.

What kind of thing is it? Paper and ink, yes, but its being as money is not in the paper: it is a social fact that exists because many accept it.
If you tear it and tape it, is it the same bill? If the bank withdraws it, did it stop being what it was without changing at all?
Esencia y existenciaEssence and existence
Its essence (means of payment) depends on there being a community that trusts it. Without it, the bill exists and its essence evaporates.
Ontología y metafísica no son exactamente lo mismoOntology and metaphysics are not exactly the same
Since Wolff, ontology is a part of metaphysics: the part dealing with being in general. Today many use them as synonyms; it helps to know they were not always.
Esencia no es lo profundo de tiEssence is not your inner depth
It is what, if a thing lacked it, would make it stop being what it is. A four-sided triangle is not an odd triangle: it is not a triangle.
Existencialismo no es angustiaExistentialism is not anguish
Anguish shows up, but the thesis is different: in human beings there is no prior essence; first you exist, then you define yourself by what you do.
Why is there something rather than nothing?G. W. Leibniz · Principles of Nature and Grace, §7 (1714)
Leibniz states it as the first question we are entitled to ask, because nothing is simpler and easier than something. Heidegger will take it up in 1935 as the fundamental question of metaphysics.
